Checking Into the Body as a Gift
Here’s an example of how deeply connected, aware, and fearless, we can become with the help of our body’s messages. It is a retelling of a poem by Rumi, a Sufi mystic of the thirteenth century. It‘s the story of a well-to-do merchant, who was also a Sufi:
A messenger arrives to tell the merchant, “Your whole fleet of ships has been in a terrible storm. Everything has been lost!”
The merchant lowers his eyes and says nothing. After a moment, he looks up at the messenger and thanks him for the information.
Two weeks pass, and the same messenger arrives again. With great excitement, he tells the merchant the good news, “The fleet is saved! Everything on board arrived safely in port!”
The merchant lowers his eyes and says nothing. Then, once more he looks up and thanks the messenger for the information.
The messenger is aghast at the unexpected quiet response to such good news. He asks politely,” I don’t understand. Each time I arrive with news, bad or good, all you do is lower your eyes. What does it mean?”
The merchant smiles, and then replies, “I am checking inside to see if there is any movement.”
Each time the merchant greeted the news as a Stop Sign moment. Stop Signs on the road make us stop for a moment, no matter how important or urgent our car trip may feel. We can notice physical discomforts, like sudden tightness, nausea, or sensations of heat and cold, as personal Stop Signs. We can stop for a moment to notice what’s happening.
The merchant focused his awareness into his body/mind system to measure his clarity. He knew the body would tell him how clear and present he was being, or not. Each time the messenger brought potentially disquieting news. The merchant wanted equanimity in the face of both financial disaster and financial success.
After all, this wasn’t his family being lost at sea. He had much less of an attachment to his money. So he checked to see how he was doing. If there was internal movement, he would know there was fear. If there was quiet, he knew there was no fear. Awareness was enough to hear the messenger and continue his life undisturbed by outer circumstances.
When we are aware, and notice internal movement, we may wonder what has caused a disquieting effect in the body. Exploring these experiences, we grow in awareness. Life seems to offer us endless opportunity to keep growing. Doesn’t it?

Blinking
When a person is truly ready to let go of past experiences and issues that they are blocking their growth, we can do what I call Blinking. Blinking is something new I am utilizing in my practice- with guidance and qi gong clients who are interested.
When we sleep, our eyes go into REM (rapid eye movement). That’s when the brain “computer” is inputting the new experiences from our day.
It’s as if we load a CD into our brain and download a new program every night. We experience our life during the day (recording the CD), and at night when we are sleeping, the brain downloads all our new experiences into our body/mind system. When the new information goes in, it's as if the body/mind says, "Oh, is that what you want! Sure, no problem!"
We can mimic the nighttime REM downloading, by consciously blinking rapidly, moving our eyes in a particular pattern, and introducing healing words like, “Let it go, let it go.” The brain responds by taking it all in as fresh, new, important, information.
There’s a bit more to it, of course, but that’s basically how it works.
Adding my experience with Qi Gong and guidance, we have been able to clear out physical and emotional residue relating to birth trauma, trauma from physical and mental abuse, separation, negligence, and divorce.
Many allergies and other immune problems can be traced back to trauma. When we clear the "deeply programmed" residue from the computer, who knows what healing can happen?
Anyone who has experienced emotional or physical trauma might benefit from this work— integrating qi gong, and guidance often needs to be a part of the process.
The trauma does not need to be re-lived in order to clear the energetic and physical residue of the traumatic experience.
One little six year-old friend completely cleared her allergy to our dog (a hairy Labrador Retriever, in case you haven’t met Shadow) while she was living with us—with just three sessions and a positive, engaged outlook.
When the person is ready, we’ve been having some amazing results. Please consider the possibilities for your self and ones you care about, and give me a call. I imagine someone you know has an issue that seems to have almost run its course, but still won’t let go entirely.....that’s when Blinking can be most effective.
