October 2006 Newsletter

Welcome!

When we are focused on balancing and integrating our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual lives, we often find it helpful to hear from others on the journey. Our deepest questions may be articulated by others. We may feel less alone, and more connected to those around us in meaningful ways.

It is my hope that the words of this occasional letter will touch your life and heart- that you will see how a life of more awareness leads to a life of healing the deepest hurts- a life of compassion for self and others, and a life worth living!

You are invited to share your insights, questions, and requests for future articles.

Inside Cover of Padme's New Book

Let's Not Call It Meditation: Practical Guidance for People Who Think They Can’t Sit Still and Quiet the Mind by Padme Nina Livingstone is now available online.

In a down-to-earth way, Let’s Not Call It Meditation takes you beyond mistaken ideas about meditation, why people do it, and what it’s supposed to do. It is all about experience— your experience.

This book is an personal invitation to go on a journey. It does not ask you to be anyone other than who you are or to change your life situation. You don’t have to join a group or a religion. There are no rituals, initiations, or dues. You need only bring a willingness to listen, and a curiosity about change.

The text reads like a friendly and lively conversation with the reader. Throughout the book, Padme weaves real life stories that connect everyday life experience to awareness and meditation. Her words gently jostle the reader towards a new possibility, a fresh perspective, and a truly authentic way of living that is available to every single one of us. As your caring guide, Padme invites you to embark on the adventure of a lifetime!

An Excerpt from Let's Not Call It Meditation

flowerLearning the Hard Way

A while ago, our son, Jason, turned seventeen. Two days after his birthday, Jason went to a concert and accepted a couple of alcoholic drinks. After the concert, he and his friends got into his car and headed home. On the way, a police officer noticed the brake light was out and pulled them over. Jason failed the sobriety tests. He was arrested and taken to the police station in handcuffs.

Jason had to deal with the consequences; a possible DWI, and the court system. He lost his driving privileges. He also lost his chance to play in sectional soccer games for his high school. Obviously, he was not using good discretion that night. It was a blessing no one was hurt.

The day after his arrest, Jason said to me, “I guess I wasn’t ready to drive.” Jason wanted me to use his story in this book. He planned to join a school club called SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), and hoped to help others make smart decisions. His ability to use discretion the next time improved with his experience and understanding.

Jason is learning discretion. As well as having the Intention to not hurt others, we also need to use our mental abilities too. We need to remember that drinking and driving is extremely dangerous for everybody. Then, we can think before we act. We can say, “No thank you” when offered alcohol and want to drive. We can also say, “No thank you” to drugs or other experiences, which can be self-destructive, or harmful to others.
